Strengthening Children and Young people’s Health and Well-being Through Collaboration
Our strategic partnership with Public Health Wales and integration with The Welsh Network of Health and Well-being Promoting Schools (WNHWPS) have empowered SHRN to expand into a national network dedicated to research and evaluation.
SHRN has become an essential and unique component of the educational health and well-being infrastructure in Wales.
About The Welsh Network of Healthy School Scheme (WNHWPS)
WNHWPS aims to keep everyone in the school community healthy. It does this by teaching healthy living and empowering learners and staff to make positive changes in their environment. The scheme focuses on improving physical, mental, and social well-being through policies, planning, and staff training. This impacts the curriculum, school culture, physical surroundings, and relationships with the community. Find out more here.
The use of SHRN data helps the scheme target interventions more effectively, focusing on areas with the greatest need and evidence of impact.
Our Partnership Achievements

Essential Data for Schools
SHRN provides crucial data that helps schools understand the health and well-being needs of their learners. Read More…

Enhanced Data Sharing
SHRN and Public Health Wales have created a public health dashboard to track the health and well-being of secondary school learners in Wales. This dashboard covers areas like physical activity, mental health, bullying, and diet. It uses interactive visuals to show trends and patterns in the SHRN data. The latest updates have improved data sharing between secondary schools, giving a fuller picture of young people’s health. This helps in monitoring and evaluating health and well-being policies more effectively. Read More.

Practice Support for Schools
WNHWPS Healthy School Coordinators work closely with schools to engage with the SHRN survey, interpret the findings, and develop action plans that address the identified needs. This ensures that interventions are targeted effectively and have the greatest impact. Read a case study.

Regional and National Insights
The SHRN School Health and Well-being Survey aids our partners in understanding the health and well-being needs of school-aged children and young people. By identifying trends over time and across different groups, the survey informs policy and action at all levels.

Policy and Practice Collaboration
By working together, we ensure that health and well-being strategies are grounded in evidence and achieve meaningful results. Read a case study.

Collaborative Working
The SHRN Student Health and Well-being Survey, conducted across both primary and secondary schools, supports school cluster working initiatives. Our data helps develop a needs-led curriculum and addresses the transition needs of learners moving from primary to secondary education.

Monitoring and Assessment
The SHRN School Environment Questionnaire (SEQ) supports WNHWPS by assessing and monitoring school policies and practices related to health and well-being. It promotes a whole-school approach, guiding resource allocation, and helping schools prepare for inspections. SEQ data informs policy development and fosters collaboration among schools, ensuring a healthier and more supportive environment for learners. Read more about the SEQ.

Workforce Development
Our ADEPT training programme helps WNHWPS Coordinators learn how to use health and well-being data more effectively. Our training helps support schools in understanding and using data to identify needs, set priorities, plan actions, and evaluate results. By improving their ability to apply evidence, ADEPT helps schools create better health and well-being programmes, leading to a healthier school environment. Read more

Bridging Practice and Research for Better Health Outcomes
‘Public Health Wales is responsible for The Welsh Network of Health and Well-being Promoting Schools and has worked with SHRN to more closely integrate the two networks: one practice oriented and one research oriented, so each can draw on the others assets and expertise in order to create more effective and sustained improvements in learner health and well-being’.
– Dr Julie Bishop, Director of Health Improvement,
Public Health Wales
By working together, SHRN and WNHWPS are making a significant impact on the health and well-being of learners across Wales, fostering a healthier, more supportive educational environment for all.
